Neurological
Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation aids the recovery of a person who has suffered an injury or illness which has affected their brain, spinal cord and / or peripheral nerves. Following this illness or injury, a person’s functional abilities and lifestyle can be dramatically altered.

What is the role of an Occupational Therapist in neurological rehabilitation?

The occupational therapists at Manchester OT have specialist knowledge and experience in treating people with neurological conditions. Treatment begins by completing an initial assessment, which would consider the impact and changes that has occurred in relation to both physical capabilities and psychological affects.

Common services we provide for neurological conditions include:

Wheelchair Assessment

If you are in need of a wheelchair, our occupational therapists can complete an assessment as to the most appropriate type of wheelchair for your needs. This will then be monitored and reviewed as appropriate.

Assessment of major home adaptations

The occupational therapists at Manchester OT provide assessments and advice regarding major home adaptations e.g. stairlifts, walk-in showers, through floor lifts, ramps etc.

Splints

Our occupational therapists fabricate specialised splints and prescribe ready made splints. Splints are used in the treatment of a variety of conditions and can be used to rest painful or swollen joints, improve the function of joint or to immobilise a joint. The Manchester OT occupational therapists will assess if a splint is needed and the best splint for your problem. They will then continually monitor the splint and provide advice and instructions on its use.

Psychological impact

Our occupational therapists always consider the psychological impact that your illness or injury may have and they would work with the person to build their self-esteem.

Hobbies/Leisure

The occupational therapists at Manchester OT always complete holistic assessments, which will consider all the aspects of a person’s life that are important to them. Therefore, they will also discuss the person’s interests and hobbies and help them to be able to participate in these again, if possible.

Work assessments

If appropriate, our occupational therapists will help and support a person to return back to work. This may include an assessment of the workplace as well as help, advice, recommendations, adaptations, support and specific rehabilitation concentrating on the skills needed to return to work.
